Real D
3D LCD TV

RealD, the company that brought 3D projection technology for theatrical release of Beowulf, has produced 3D CRT displays for military and commercial uses for over twenty years under the name Stereographics. RealD came to D2M to adapt their CRT technology to LCD displays in order to stay on pace with the trend away from bulky displays. D2M’s extensive experience in packaging and system level design was called upon to package their recent 3D LCD technology into a slimmer, sleeker housing in an effort to branch into the home consumer product industry.

The Details
In close collaboration with industrial designers from San Francisco-based Ammunition Group, D2M mechanical engineers packaged RealD’s LCD technology into a rugged-looking aesthetic with visual echoes of the H2 Hummer. We designed parts for low-cost manufacturing while adhering to a small physical footprint. Electrical developments were made to balance optical performance, thermal constraints, and component life. Our engineers also conceptualized and developed thermal solutions to comply with product regulations while maintaining the industrial design. Meanwhile, the designs remained sensitive to the client’s compressed timeline and high aesthetic standards.
