Northwind Technologies
Emergency IV System (EIVS)
Doctors and rescuers in the field are often in unstable environments, without space to hang or hold up IV bags for extended periods of time. Northwind Technologies developed the concept of administering fluids from an IV bag at the same elevation as the patient using the pressure within a CO2 canister. For this product, D2M engineers developed a manufacturable CO2 pressure regulator to simulate gravitational pull, and a drip cup that permits drug delivery in all infusion set orientations. Our experience designing within medical regulatory constraints spoke to D2M’s value in the design and product development process.
The Details
Northwind Technologies’ EIVS product provides far greater flexibility within unpredictable environments with the manufacturable CO2 pressure regulator and drip cup designs that D2M helped engineer. With this product, a single, inexpensively obtained CO2 canister is capable of delivering approximately 2-3 hours of fluid to a patient at the patient’s own altitude, thus freeing the arm of a rescuer to tend to other urgencies.
D2M engineers provided considerable design flexibility to plastic parts to allow for significant, low-cost tooling flexibility throughout the design phase. Engineers also tackled a cost exercise to determine whether Northwind Technologies’ EIVS could be produced at a sufficiently low cost in order to make it a disposable product.
