High Performance Telecom R&D
Gemfire Corporation, a company founded in 1995, specializes in innovative new high-performance telecom and specialty components. D2M provided proof of concept engineering support, manufacturing alignment fixtures, packaging design assistance and high reliability driver designs for several of their key products, including an eight channel 980nm EDFA laser pump source and a multi-channel VOA (Variable Optical Attenuator). Our R&D partnership lasted over 2 years, from early concept phases through to manufacturing. Throughout that period, Gemfire considered D2M to be an indispensable partner in the development of innovative and cutting edge technology.
The Details
D2M collaborated closely with Gemfire's scientists and engineers to develop, refine, and deliver various key components. We developed precision alignment core laser and optical component handling fixtures to assist with basic demonstrations of technology and to establish driving tolerances for the manufactured devices. D2M supplied analyses, design strategies and individual part designs to aid system packaging that balanced various thermal and mechanical stress considerations and hermetic sealing requirements. To provide performance demonstrations and a reference design for potential clients, we also designed a precise, high reliability laser driver for the pump source module. We refined active alignment processes and fixtures to manufacture multiple key optical interfaces in series with sub-micron precision, meet performance and lifetime specifications and maximize throughput.
